The job applicants struggled to move the safe, thinking that was a test of their brawn, but in vain. Then came Johnny, a well-built muscular man. When he was asked to move the safe, he said, “Are you kidding? I can’t move that safe by myself. I need help.” He got the job.

HOW TO MAKE EFFECTIVE DECISIONS

1.Don’t ask others to make decisions for you. Effective decision making is a do-it-yourself project.
2. Surround yourself with the facts. Look for distorted facts, weed them out.
3.Argue the pros and cons. Know what you are getting into. See the consequence of your final decision. Once you’ve made your decision and acted on it, forget about it. Don’t worry about the outcome.
4. Don’t let people become hostile when discusing problems that require an important decision. Clear thinking is the answer, not heated arguments and temper tantrums.
5. Never make important decisions when you are angry, ill or in any way emotionally disturbed.
Put your problems in writing.
6. Turn your problems to your subconscious mind. Repeat ‘solution’ throughout your day. Know that subconscious has the answer and will reveal it to you.
7. Visualize the outcome of your problem. Picture it in your mind’s eye as you want it to be.
8.Never compromise your ideals or allow others to mentally blackmail you into making decisions you know are wrong. Stand up for your right of free thought.

UNSEEN MERIT
A Churchgoer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. “I’ve gone and done it for 30 long years now,” he wrote, “and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can’t remember a single one of them. So, I think I’m wasting my time and the preachers are wasting theirs too by giving lengthy sermons all.” This started a real controversy in the ‘letters to the editor’ column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher: “I’ve been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know that they all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me those meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!”

An old man lived alone in Minnesota. He wanted to spade his potato garden, but it was very hard work. His only son, who would have helped him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and mentioned his situation: “Dear Son, I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my potato garden this year. I hate to miss doing the garden, because your mother always loved planting them. I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here, all my troubles would be over. I know you would dig the plot for me, if you weren’t in prison.” Shortly, the old man received this telegram: “For Heaven’s sake, Dad, don’t dig up the garden! That’s where I buried the guns!” At 4 am the next morning, a dozen FBI agents and local police officers showed up and dug up the entire garden without finding any guns.Confused, the old man wrote another note to his son telling him what happened, and asked him what to do next. His son’s reply was: “Go ahead and plant your potatoes, Dad. It’s the best I could do for you from here.”

THE CREATOR OF THE POLIO VACCINE
Jonas Salk is known best as the developer of the first successful vaccine against polio, but he also made many other contributions in the field of medicine. Though Salk’s family was poor and lacked formal education, they urged their children to work and study hard. Though he wanted to become a lawyer, he eventually entered into a medical school. It was when polio was one of the greatest cripplers and killers in the world. Many died and most were unable to walk because the disease weakened the muscles and the nerves.Salk felt the compelling desire to develop a polio vaccine. He often worked twenty hours a day, seven days a week, trying one serum after another. His colleagues were often astonished by his tireless and painstaking efforts. Salk’s break-through came in 1953 when he discovered a vaccine using dead polio virus cells to help the body’s immune system create antibodies to fight off live virus cells.The question was raised then as to whether the new found vaccine could be injected into humans. To prove his confidence in the vaccine, he injected the same into himself and his children due to the objections from government authorities. The vaccine proved successful as everybody who received the test vaccine started producing anti-bodies against the virus. Thus the vaccine for polio came into existence. All what Salk had to say was, “Hope lies in dreams and in the courage of those who dare to make dreams a reality. "
